Fort Polk is a combat training center that trains combat units. Most of the acreage is owned by the Department of the Army or the Forest Service, and Fort Polk encompasses over 190,000 acres. Fort Polk is located near Leesville, Louisiana and is home to the Joint Readiness Training Center, the 10th Mountain Division, the 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, and the 162nd Infantry Brigade. Housing at Fort Polk is privatized and all military personnel who are assigned to a military base within 35 miles of Fort Polk are authorized to live in family housing. For off-post housing, there are homes for sale and rent in two nearby neighborhoods of Timber Ridge and Sycamore Point which is located about 2 miles from the post. Temporary housing is provided at the Welsh Magnolia House which is designed as a hotel with full amenities. The Warrior92s Keep offer over 240 rooms for temporary residents and reservations can be made by calling 337-531-9200. The hotel is located near the child development center, the youth center, the commissary, and the 24-hour shoppette.
The Fort Polk Child Development Center is located in Building 744, Utah Ave and offers daycare for children from 6 weeks to 6 years of age, Monday through Friday. Part day care, hourly care, before and after kindergarten care are also offered. Child care programs include computer and homework instruction, skating, and bowling. Snacks are provided, and more information can be found by contacting the center at 337-531-2149. Children who live on base at Fort Polk attend the Vernon Parish Communities schools. Students who reside off post may attend South or North Polk Elementary schools, Vernon Elementary, Leesville, Pickering, or Deridder, depending on where they live.
